Why Choose Block Paving for Your Driveway?

Block paving is one of the most popular driveway surfaces in the UK for good reason — it combines exceptional durability with a finish that lifts the entire front of a property. Here's why thousands of homeowners in Wakefield and across West Yorkshire choose block paving year after year.

    Exceptional kerb appeal

A well-laid block paving driveway transforms a tired forecourt into a genuine feature. The clean lines, defined edging, and choice of colours create a first impression that adds real value to your home.

    Built to last

Block paving driveways are designed to bear vehicle weight, withstand frost and heavy rain, and resist daily wear without cracking or shifting — provided the sub-base is installed correctly. Our sub-bases are engineered to the right depth and specification every time, which is why we can stand behind our 10-year warranty.

    Easy to repair

One of the biggest advantages block paving has over concrete or tarmac is repairability. If a single block cracks or a utility company needs to excavate, individual blocks can be lifted and relaid. The repair blends in — no ugly patches, no visible joins.

    Pattern variety

From classic herringbone to modern running-bond, block paving gives you genuine choice over the look. We'll walk you through the options during your free survey and show you how different patterns suit different property styles.

    Permeable options available

Where SuDS compliance is required — or where drainage is a concern — we can install permeable block paving that allows water to pass through, reducing runoff and meeting planning requirements without sacrificing appearance. Looking for other permeable options? Consider resin driveways.

    Block Paving Styles & Patterns

Choosing the right pattern is as important as choosing the right block colour. The pattern affects structural performance as well as aesthetics. Here are the options we install most frequently:

    Herringbone (90° and 45°)

The most popular choice for driveways — and with good reason. Herringbone interlocks each block diagonally into its neighbours, creating a pattern that resists lateral movement under vehicle loads. It's the strongest laying pattern available for driveways, and it looks sharp on any property. The 45° herringbone is the more traditional look; 90° gives a slightly bolder, more contemporary feel.

    Rectangular / Running Bond

Blocks are laid end-to-end in offset rows, similar to a brick wall. Clean, modern, and very versatile. Works especially well with larger-format blocks or when you want a more understated finish.

    Basketweave

Pairs of blocks are laid at alternating right angles to create a woven pattern. Basketweave is best suited to pedestrian areas or low-traffic sections — it's a popular choice for patios and borders that tie in with a block paving driveway.

    Circular Feature Panels

A circle feature set into the driveway — often positioned at the turning point or centre of a wider forecourt — adds an architectural quality that makes a driveway feel genuinely designed rather than simply surfaced. We use pre-cut circle kits in a range of diameters and colours that complement the main laying pattern.

    Mixed-Colour Borders and Banding

A contrasting edging colour — a darker charcoal border around a buff main body, for example — frames the driveway and gives it a finished, premium quality. We always discuss border options as part of the design process because they make a significant visual difference.

    Our Block Paving Installation Process

We follow the same proven 5-stage process on every driveway — no shortcuts, no cut-rate materials, no corners. This is how we maintain the standard that justifies a 10-year workmanship warranty.

    1

    Free Home Survey

We visit your property, assess the existing surface, discuss design options, and take measurements. You'll receive a detailed, itemised quote within 48 hours. No obligation.

    2

    Excavation and Removal

We excavate to the correct depth — typically 200–300mm depending on ground conditions and driveway use. All spoil is removed and disposed of responsibly. If the existing driveway is being replaced, we break it out and take it away completely.

    3

    Sub-Base Installation

This is the most important stage, and the one most likely to be skimped on by less experienced contractors. We lay a minimum 100mm compacted MOT Type 1 hardcore sub-base (deeper on softer ground), blinded with sharp sand to create a stable, level, well-draining foundation. The sub-base is what prevents blocks from sinking, shifting, or cracking over time.

    4

    Block Laying

Blocks are laid to your chosen pattern, cut precisely at the edges, and checked for level throughout. Edge restraints — either concrete haunching or specialist plastic kerb edging — are installed to prevent lateral spread and keep the driveway looking sharp indefinitely.

    5

    Pointing, Compacting, and Sealing

Once all blocks are laid, the driveway is compacted using a plate compactor to lock everything together. Kiln-dried sand is then brushed in to fill the joints and complete the interlock. We offer optional sealant application, which protects against oil stains, enhances colour, and inhibits weed growth between blocks.
