Why Choose Tarmac for Your Driveway?
Tarmac is one of the most practical driveway surfaces available, and it's popular across Wakefield and West Yorkshire for good reason. Here's what makes it a strong choice:
Lowest Cost per Sqm
Tarmac is consistently one of the most affordable surfacing options. You get a high-quality, durable finish without the premium price tag of block paving or resin.
Fast Installation
Most tarmac driveways can be completed in a day or two, depending on size. The surface cures quickly, so you're not locked out of your driveway for long.
Built to Last
A properly installed tarmac driveway — with a correct sub-base and good compaction — will typically last 20 to 25 years. The key word is "properly." We don't cut corners on preparation.
Low Maintenance
Tarmac doesn't require regular sealing, weeding, or relaying of individual units. A periodic reseal every five to seven years keeps it in great condition, but there's no complex upkeep involved.

Standard vs Coloured Tarmac
Most people picture black tarmac when they think of a tarmac driveway — and that's absolutely the most common choice. But if you want something a little more distinctive, coloured tarmac is worth considering.
Standard tarmac uses bitumen-bound aggregate to produce a dense, dark grey-to-black surface. It's uniform in appearance, absorbs heat well in cooler months, and blends naturally into most streetscapes. This is the right choice if you want a clean, no-fuss finish at a straightforward price.
Coloured tarmac uses the same laying process and the same durable base, but the surface aggregate is coated or pigmented to produce a different finish. Common colour options include:
- Red — popular for driveways and paths, gives a warm tone that contrasts well with grey or stone properties
- Brindle — a mixed blend of red and black that breaks up the uniformity without being too bold
- Green — less common but works well in rural settings or properties with a lot of landscaping nearby
It's important to understand that coloured tarmac is a surface dressing or a pigmented top course — the structural layers underneath are identical to a standard installation. You're paying for the aesthetic, not a different type of surface. Colours are UV-stable but will naturally fade a little over time, which is normal and expected.
If you're unsure which option suits your property, our surveyor will bring samples and talk you through it on-site.
Our Tarmac Driveway Installation Process
Every tarmac driveway we install follows the same structured process. There are no shortcuts, because shortcuts are where problems start.
Free Home Survey
We visit your property, assess the existing ground conditions, measure the area, and identify any drainage requirements or access considerations. You'll receive a clear, written quote before any work is agreed.
Excavation
We excavate the existing surface to the required depth — typically 150–200mm. Existing concrete, old tarmac, or loose material is removed and taken away. The area is left clean and level.
Sub-Base Installation
A solid sub-base is the foundation of a good tarmac driveway. We lay and compact MOT Type 1 stone to the correct depth. This is what prevents sinking, cracking, and drainage failure down the line.
Tarmac Laying
We lay the tarmac in courses — a binder course followed by the surface course — and compact each layer properly using a vibrating roller. This ensures full compaction, correct falls for drainage, and a tight, dense finish.
Edging and Finishing
Where required, we install block paving or concrete kerb edging to define the boundary of the driveway and prevent edge spread over time. The site is then cleared, swept, and left clean.

Request a QuoteHow Long Does Tarmac Last?
A tarmac driveway that's been installed correctly — proper excavation depth, solid sub-base, and adequate compaction — will typically last between 20 and 25 years before it needs replacing. That's comparable to most driveway surfaces and significantly longer than poorly installed alternatives.
The main factors that affect lifespan are:
- Installation quality. This is the biggest variable. Tarmac laid on an inadequate sub-base will crack, subside, or deform within a few years under vehicle load.
- Drainage. Water trapped beneath a tarmac surface will cause it to fail prematurely. We always ensure the surface is laid with appropriate falls.
- Maintenance. Tarmac benefits from a reseal every five to seven years. This isn't essential, but it refreshes the surface and slows oxidation.
With 15 years in the trade and a 10-year warranty on all our work, we stand behind how we install. If something goes wrong as a result of our workmanship, we come back and fix it — that's the warranty commitment.
