Resin Bound vs Resin Bonded — What's the Difference?
This is the question we get asked more than any other. The two terms sound similar, but they describe very different products with different performance characteristics, planning implications, and price points. Here's a clear explanation.
Resin Bound
In a resin bound system, the natural stone aggregate is thoroughly mixed with UV-stable polyurethane resin before it is applied to the surface. The result is a completely smooth, flat finish where every stone is encapsulated in resin and bound together. Because there are small voids between the individual stones, a resin bound driveway is porous — water drains directly through the surface into the sub-base below.
This porosity is what makes resin bound driveways SuDS-compliant (Sustainable Drainage Systems), meaning they satisfy the planning requirement that new driveways must not discharge surface water onto the public highway. Resin bound is the premium option: more expensive than resin bonded, longer-lasting, and the more commonly specified finish for residential driveways.
Resin Bonded
In a resin bonded system, resin is applied directly to an existing hard surface (usually tarmac driveways or concrete), and loose aggregate is then scattered onto the wet resin and pressed in. The aggregate sits on top of the resin layer, rather than being mixed through it. The result is a rougher, more textured surface — and critically, it is not porous. Water cannot pass through a resin bonded finish.
Resin bonded is a more affordable way to improve the appearance of an existing driveway without full replacement. It's quicker to install and more affordable, but it doesn't carry the same drainage advantages or SuDS compliance as a resin bound system. Some aggregate loss over time is also more likely with bonded finishes.
Which should you choose? For most residential driveways where you want a long-lasting, premium, low-maintenance surface — resin bound is the right choice. If you have a sound existing surface in good condition and want a more affordable facelift, resin bonded is a practical option. We'll advise you honestly based on your specific property during the free survey.

Benefits of a Resin Driveway
Low maintenance
Once laid, a resin driveway requires very little upkeep. There are no joints or block edges for weeds to grow through, the smooth surface is easy to sweep clean, and a gentle pressure wash is all it takes to keep it looking fresh year after year.
Excellent drainage (resin bound)
Resin bound driveways allow water to drain through the surface naturally, reducing puddle formation and surface runoff. This is particularly valuable in West Yorkshire, where heavy rainfall can quickly overwhelm impermeable surfaces.
Weed-free surface
The fully bound nature of a resin surface eliminates the joint gaps that weeds typically exploit. You won't be spending Sunday mornings pulling weeds from your driveway.
Durable and UV-stable
We use UV-stable polyurethane resin as standard, which means the finish won't yellow, fade, or discolour in sunlight over time. The surface is also resistant to fuel and oil spills — any contamination can be cleaned off without staining the resin.
Wide choice of colours and aggregates
Natural stone aggregates come in a broad range of colours — from warm golden tones to contemporary charcoal — and can be blended to create custom shades. This gives resin driveways a distinctly premium, designed appearance.
Slip-resistant & Adds value
The aggregate surface provides excellent traction in wet conditions. A quality resin bound driveway is also one of the home improvement investments with a demonstrably positive effect on property valuation and buyer appeal.

Resin Driveway Colours & Finishes
One of the real pleasures of choosing a resin driveway is the range of natural stone aggregates available. Unlike tarmac (which comes in black or nothing), resin surfaces can be finished in dozens of colours and blends. Here are the most popular options we install in Wakefield and across West Yorkshire:
- Golden Gravel — warm amber and gold tones from natural quartzite. The most popular residential choice. Works with traditional brick properties and newer builds alike.
- Silver / Pearl Grey — cool grey tones with flecks of silver. Very popular with contemporary properties and modern extensions. Creates a clean, sophisticated appearance.
- Buff / Ivory — soft, neutral tones. Particularly popular with sandstone or limestone-fronted properties, where a warm neutral ties in with the building materials.
- Charcoal / Graphite — dark, bold, and dramatic. Suits modern architecture, industrial-style properties, and homeowners who want a striking contrast against light-coloured fascias.
- Custom Blends — aggregate colours can be mixed in different ratios to achieve a bespoke shade. If you have a specific colour in mind, we can work with our suppliers to find the closest aggregate match.
We bring sample boards to every home survey so you can see the colours in natural light and against your property before committing.
Our Resin Driveway Installation Process
A resin driveway is only as good as the surface it's laid on. Our 5-stage process ensures every installation is built to last — and to warrant.
1 Free Home Survey
We visit, assess the existing surface condition, discuss design options, and take measurements. We'll tell you honestly whether your existing base is suitable for resin bonded, or whether a new base is required for resin bound. Quote delivered within 48 hours.
2 Base Preparation
For resin bound installations over a new base, we excavate to the correct depth, install a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, and finish with a macadam or concrete base layer. For resin bound over an existing surface, we assess and repair any damage to ensure a structurally sound, crack-free base.
3 Priming
The base surface is primed to ensure maximum adhesion between the resin layer and the substrate. This step is essential for longevity and is one of the most frequently skipped by less diligent contractors. We never skip it.
4 Mixing and Application
The natural aggregate and UV-stable polyurethane resin are machine-mixed in the correct ratio and applied at the correct depth (typically 15–18mm for pedestrian and vehicle areas). The team works quickly and methodically to achieve a smooth, consistent finish before the resin begins to cure.
5 Edging, Curing, and Handover
Aluminium or steel edging profiles are installed at all borders to give a clean, defined finish and prevent edge breakout. The surface is left to cure for a minimum of 24 hours before foot traffic and 48 hours before vehicle use. We carry out a final inspection before handover and issue your 10-year warranty documentation.

SuDS Compliance — Why It Matters
SuDS stands for Sustainable Drainage Systems — a set of planning requirements that have been in effect in England since 2008 under the Flood and Water Management Act. In simple terms: if you're installing a new driveway in front of your home, the surface must not direct water onto the public highway or into the public drainage system.
Why this affects your driveway choice:
Impermeable surfaces — concrete, solid tarmac, most block paving — discharge rainwater directly as runoff. In high volumes, this contributes to localised flooding, overwhelmed drainage systems, and pollution. The legislation exists to prevent this.
Resin bound driveways are inherently SuDS-compliant because water passes directly through the surface into the permeable sub-base and then soaks away naturally. This means a resin bound installation typically satisfies planning requirements without the need for additional drainage channels or planning consent.
This is worth knowing before you compare quotes. A resin bound driveway may cost slightly more upfront than an impermeable alternative — but it may save you the cost and delay of a planning application, and it avoids the requirement to install separate drainage infrastructure.
We'll confirm the planning position for your specific installation during the free survey. Most residential resin bound driveways fall comfortably within Permitted Development.
